Most people think of professional photos during major milestones: pregnancy, a newborn baby, maybe a yearly family session. But motherhood isn’t just one season. It’s a relationship that continues to evolve through every stage of life. And every version of motherhood feels important when you’re living it. The anticipation of pregnancy. The exhaustion of the newborn days. The chaos of raising little kids. The bittersweet realization that your children suddenly aren’t so little anymore.
As an Austin family photographer and mother, I know all too well how quickly these seasons pass. That’s one of the reasons I love photographing motherhood sessions in my favorite historic natural light studio in Central Austin. The studio offers a calm, comfortable space to step out of the Texas heat, slow down for an hour, and focus on what matters most: the connection between you and your children. Whether you’re expecting your first baby or watching your teenager grow into their own person, these sessions are a reminder that there is no “perfect” age to document your family. There is only right now.

One of the reasons I love photographing motherhood sessions in the studio is that it works beautifully for every age and stage.
The historic natural light studio I use in Central Austin offers gorgeous window light, multiple backdrop options, and plenty of room for families to relax and simply be together. During the Texas summer, it also gives us a way to avoid the heat!
While the studio offers a variety of backdrop options, I find myself continually returning to the classic cream canvas backdrop. It’s timeless, photographs beautifully on film, and keeps the focus exactly where it belongs: on the connection between a mother and her children.
Film photography is also a huge part of my work. I love the softness, texture, and nostalgia that film brings to motherhood sessions. There is something about photographing these relationships on film that feels especially fitting. Both are reminders that time moves quickly and deserves to be preserved.

One of my favorite things about these sessions is seeing how differently motherhood looks from family to family. Some mothers arrive with a baby bump and dreams of meeting their little one. Others are carrying babies in their arms. Some are wrangling energetic toddlers. Others are spending an hour laughing with children who are nearly grown. And each stage has its own beauty.
Maternity and newborn sessions are often the first professional photographs families invest in, and for good reason. These seasons pass incredibly quickly.
My maternity sessions are always two hours long to allow plenty of time for outfit changes, creativity, and simply settling into the experience. Newborn sessions are also two hours long, so there is space for feeding breaks, diaper changes, and all the flexibility that comes with life alongside a new baby.
Nothing is rushed. The goal is always to create an experience that feels calm, relaxed, and centered on your family.

But motherhood doesn’t stop after the newborn stage. Some of my favorite images happen when children are old enough to fully show their personalities. Toddlers run, jump, and explore. School-aged kids tell jokes and make up games. Teenagers bring a confidence and individuality that deserve to be documented too.
For younger children, one hour is usually perfect. We play music, let them move around, and follow their lead rather than forcing stiff poses or perfect smiles. I want to capture you as authentically as possible while still offering tips and guidance on how to look your best on camera.

One thing I tell every family before their session is that I am not interested in creating a Pinterest-perfect version of your life. I’m interested in documenting you.
That philosophy extends to everything from how we photograph the session to what you choose to wear. I always encourage mothers to start with themselves. Wear the favorite dress hanging in your closet. The pair of jeans you feel amazing in. The Christy Dawn dress you reach for over and over again. The outfit that already feels like you.
Then build everyone else’s outfits around that! I don’t believe families need to be perfectly matching. In fact, I think matching outfits often remove the very thing that makes family photographs meaningful: personality.
Dress your kids in clothes they love. Choose pieces that feel authentic to your family. Let everyone look like themselves. Because fifty years from now, I don’t want you looking back at these photographs and seeing a trend or a Pinterest board. I want you to remember exactly who you were.
The way your toddler insisted on wearing those shoes. The dress you wore every chance you got. The season of life you were living together. Those are the details that become priceless over time.

If you’re looking for Austin motherhood photography that focuses on connection over perfection, I’d love to help you document this season of your family’s story. Whether you’re expecting your first baby or celebrating the relationship you’ve built over years together, every stage of motherhood deserves to be remembered. Schedule your session and let’s create something meaningful together.
