I love meeting new families as a family photographer! After following along on Instagram for a while, Maya reached out to me about an at-home family session with film. She envisioned a laid-back atmosphere that would capture the essence of their growing family. With a 13-year-old, a 7-year-old, and a 2-year-old, she knew big changes were just around the corner! Her toddler’s room was about to be turned into their eldest new bedroom, so documenting this stage felt essential to preserve a slice of their family history before it all shifted. As a mom myself, I understood completely!

At-Home Family Session with Film

When Maya booked me for their 2-hour at-home session, she wanted to include film in the package. She loved the look of flash film photography for some of their shots, and I was happy to add that to our session. Film is something I always love as an add-on to family sessions! It’s a purposeful medium that captures moments with an honest, tangible quality.

Because Maya wanted to commemorate this exact time in her children’s lives, we opted to hold the session at home—where we could capture their everyday joys like skateboarding, biking, and all of their current interests. It was especially important to photograph the toddler’s room before it got repurposed, preserving the toys, décor, and routines that make life so sweet right now. Above all, our goal was to showcase how life felt at this very moment, so the family could look back one day and relive these fleeting days in vivid detail.

While at-home sessions naturally invite a cozy, real-life feel, they sometimes require a bit of flexibility. For example, the toddler’s room was a bit on the darker side, so I opted to shoot high flash for part of the session. Knowing flash was something Maya really loved, it worked out perfectly. Years of experience photographing families in their homes helped me navigate the nuances of the lighting and layout.

It was so great to be able to work with Maya and her beautiful family. I loved being able to document them as they are today and give them physical copies of their memories.
