If there’s one thing parents everywhere can agree on, it’s the struggle of the newborn stage. And when you’re wandering through a sleep deprivation-induced fog, the last thing you want to do is invite a photographer into your home. So, why not book a 6-month milestone session instead? In many ways, this is the perfect age to document your little one’s growth. They’ll be smiling at you and eager to explore the world around them. Plus, they’ll look more adorable than ever with those chubby cheeks and baby rolls we love!
As an Austin family photographer and a mama, I couldn’t relate more to the pressure many parents feel to document their little ones’ arrival. I remember feeling so much guilt when my son River was a newborn. Sleep felt like a distant dream, and getting dressed for photos was off the table. Still, I kept thinking, shouldn’t we be documenting this? Ultimately, we waited until he was four months old before scheduling a session with a professional photographer. It was the right choice for us, and I encourage all parents to do what’s best for them!
When the Macknight family inquired about a 6-month milestone session with their baby girl, their story sounded like mine. The first few months after her arrival were a blur of sleep deprivation and big emotions. They had a million and one photos of their daughter on their phones, but they weren’t in any of them (it happens!). They also didn’t have any photos as a family, including their two cats. With Roz being six months old and starting to show off her personality, it was the right time to schedule a professional photography session!
I had so much fun coming into this little family’s world. I followed them through a morning together, from when Roz woke up until it was time for her midday nap. Her sweet smile upon seeing her mom and dad first thing in the morning melted my heart! I also loved her curiosity. She spent most of the session exploring her toys, interacting with her cats, and being silly with her parents. I adored documenting every little moment, and I know she’ll treasure seeing them when she gets older!
For a 6-month milestone session (and family photography in general), it’s best to dress and go about your day as authentically as possible. To that end, it’s helpful to have ideas for activities in mind! For example, Roz’s favorite activities are playing on her mat, reading books, and lying on her mom and dad’s bed, so we incorporated all those things into our session. She also loves going into the backyard, so we explored the flowers in the garden (yep, one ended up in her mouth, as often happens at her age!). It felt raw and genuine, which is always my aim for my photography.
This Austin 6-month milestone session was such a pleasure to capture. I enjoyed getting to know the Macknight family and can’t wait to watch Roz grow in the coming years. If you resonate with my work, I would love to document a day at home with you and your sweet little one! Inquire today to book your session.
