As an Austin family photographer, you know I love a Barton Springs family session. And this one was extra special because I had the opportunity to capture my own family!
My sister-in-law, Shefaly, loves my psychedelic sessions, and her 50th birthday was coming up. So it just made sense to head down to Barton Springs and shoot some candid family portraits to celebrate the milestone. Her teenage daughters even participated (because psychedelic film is cool, duh!), and it turned out to be the perfect birthday gift all around. I’m so excited to share these images—they’re joyful, vibrant, and beautifully nostalgic.

We began the shoot with a meaningful piece of family history: the old VW Bug that Shefaly and her husband had owned since becoming parents, but were getting ready to sell. Before saying goodbye, they wanted to recreate old family photos now that their daughters are teenagers. Not only did this add a deeply personal element to the session, but it also fit perfectly with the vintage vibe of the psychedelic film.
Then we headed down to the springs, where the Ravulas spent time lounging in the grass, playing cards, and taking dips in the water. I love shooting Barton Springs family sessions on psychedelic film because the medium comes alive in sunny, open spaces with lots of water. Barton Springs, in particular, has beautiful, vibrant green water that looks almost cinematic on film. Plus, this location has built-in activities for families: lounge in the sun, then jump into the ice-cold water. Rinse and repeat. It’s a total no-brainer for authentic, dynamic family portraits.
The Ravulas also brought their personal style into this shoot, which gave it even more personality! Their colorful striped blanket, groovy cover-ups, and pastel inner tubes complemented the dreamy tones of the psychedelic film, making the session feel even more special. And when they pulled out their favorite well-worn deck of cards, it became the perfect way to capture them authentically.

For all the parents of teenagers out there, I hope this Barton Springs family session encourages you that we really can get your teens to participate in photos. It’s all about creating a shoot that speaks their language. And psychedelic film—with its candid frames and retro-cool colors—appeals to the young-at-heart and old souls alike.
