Peixi and Mike met while they were in graduate school at Stanford, and have recently settled in Austin. I’m so glad they chose to move here, because photographing their wedding at Mattie’s Green Pastures was a blast! The celebration centered on spending quality time with their guests—a mix of family, old friends, and mutual acquaintances from grad school—from start to finish. From the morning until one hour before the reception ended, I captured eight hours of priceless memories on digital, film, and Polaroid. I’m so excited to be sharing some of the highlights from that day!
If you’ve spent time poking around the blog, you know I love a Mattie’s wedding. The historic venue, located in South Central Austin, was once a family home and is now a restaurant and event space. Mature oak trees dot the property, where peacocks roam freely. It feels like a surreal oasis amid the commotion of the city, but it’s just a short shuttle ride from downtown hotels! Peixi and Mike chose the venue because of its convenient location for their out-of-town guests.
The couple also fell in love with the venue’s eclectic interior design style. As a photographer, I’ve always appreciated this aspect of Mattie’s the most. It feels like a historic country home, but with a moody, modern twist! My favorite rooms to shoot in are the bar, with its soft blue walls, and the teal-painted upstairs bridal suite. During Peixi and Mike’s portrait session, I mostly followed them around the grounds, capturing candid moments. However, we also spent time in the house grabbing a few editorial-style shots, which I love!
This wedding day had one of the funniest moments I’ve ever photographed. Peixi knew that Mike would likely have some nerves on their big day. So, she teamed up with one of their friends to plan a silly surprise: a first look fakeout! When Mike turned around, expecting to see Peixi, he was shocked to see a man wearing a wedding dress instead. He immediately doubled over in laughter! It was a hilarious moment that calmed his nerves in preparation for the real first look that was to follow.
When I reflect on Peixi and Mike’s wedding day, the main thing that stands out is how laid-back it was. The couple planned a celebration that took place almost entirely outdoors, allowing them to soak up Austin’s gorgeous spring weather. And they wrote their own vows, which they read during their ceremony under the live oak trees—leaving many of their guests reaching for their tissues! The entire day felt easy and flowed naturally, like a breath of fresh air. The reception was also one of the most epic parties I’ve had the pleasure of capturing!
Peixi and Mike’s wedding at Mattie’s Green Pastures brimmed with laughter and love—a lighthearted celebration to match the breezy and sunny spring day. I’m incredibly grateful that they trusted me to document it! Whether you’re planning an Austin wedding or elopement, my approach to photography ensures you’re left with authentic, heirloom-quality imagery to preserve your precious memories. I’d love to connect with you to discuss your vision for your day and see if we’re a good fit.
