If you’ve ever been to West Texas, you know it has a unique magic. As an Austin wedding photographer, I love shooting there. So I was thrilled when Maggie and Kevin booked me for their disco cowboy wedding in Marfa! The couple invited their loved ones to celebrate with them over an entire weekend, which kicked off with a welcome party at Corte del Norte. Then, they tied the knot under the open sky on Maggie’s boss’s ranch, with the mountains as their backdrop.

Maggie and Kevin met online, and their first date was at a bar in Austin—where we took their engagement photos! West Texas is one of their favorite places to go together, and they had always known their wedding would be there. So, when Maggie’s boss offered them his land for the day, it was kismet! I shot nine hours of coverage solo, including film and Polaroids. Thanks to Jona and Cara of Open Road Events, who connected Maggie and Kevin with me, the free-spirited, disco-inspired celebration went off without a hitch.

Maggie and Kevin’s wedding day would have been special anywhere, but it wouldn’t have been the same without the West Texas setting. The region’s easygoing, Lone Star spirit was present even in the smallest details of the day, from Maggie’s long, flowing curls to Kevin’s bolo tie, engraved with the mountain range visible from the ceremony site.
We shot their portraits in Marfa first, before making the twenty-minute drive to the ranch. I loved that we had time to shoot in both locations! It allowed us to capture some artful, candid images of them in a town so near to their hearts, and amid the mountain landscape where they exchanged vows.

The emotional ceremony, officiated by Maggie’s boss and attended by the couple’s two beloved dogs, gave way to an al fresco dinner. As one of West Texas’ famous sunsets painted the horizon, Maggie and Kevin’s guests took turns toasting. It was so special to witness all of their favorite people showering them with love.
But my favorite part of the day was the tented disco reception that followed the meal! Bathed in multi-colored lights that gave the party a psychedelic feel, the couple and their guests danced the night away. Kevin was the star of the dance floor, with moves that kept the energy high all evening!

I photographed this wedding in Marfa without a second shooter. While nine hours of coverage with multiple cameras was a lot for one photographer to handle, it was also exhilarating! I loved shooting film and digital images for Maggie and Kevin, plus a sprinkling of Polaroids throughout the day.
Every time I have the honor of photographing a wedding, it’s important to me to document it authentically. When you look at your images ten years later, I want you to be transported back to how you felt that day. Whether you’re planning a traditional wedding, an elopement, or something in between, I’ll be committed to preserving every moment—so you can focus on living them.
