Austin Family Photography: Maternity and Newborn Bundle

Whether you’re a first-time mama or a seasoned parent, there’s nothing quite like pregnancy and welcoming a new member of the family. As your body expands, your heart does too, preparing to love someone new. And as an Austin family photographer and mom myself, I love documenting this tender transition, from mama in all of her beauty to those sleepy newborn days.

Marla booked my Maternity and Newborn Bundle to celebrate her pregnancy and the arrival of her third baby. Her studio maternity session was a celebration of HER, complete with rented outfits, groovy props, and an appearance by her husband and kiddos at the end. Then came the newborn session: a laidback morning at home welcoming baby Maren and capturing the family in their own space. Studio Maternity Session in Austin

Marla shared such a unique vision for her maternity session, and I loved bringing it to life. This portion of the Maternity and Newborn Bundle is all about celebrating mama—who she already is as a woman and who she’s becoming in motherhood. The backdrops in my natural light studio are intentionally minimal, keeping the focus on her. That simplicity leaves plenty of room for creativity, whether you want to change outfits three times or dance around to your favorite music.

For her session, Marla rented clothes from Nuuly (bring on all the oversized coats!) and fully embraced a vintage cool-girl vibe, complete with bubble gum and disco balls as props. She also brought the cutest stickers for her two older boys to decorate her belly with. I loved that we spent the first half of the session focusing on Marla, then invited her husband and sons in for the second half. Mom deserves her own time to shine, so I’m always here for splitting maternity sessions this way.

Relaxed At-Home Newborn Session in Austin

If the maternity session was all about styling things up, the newborn session was about slowing down and keeping things relaxed for Marla. Postpartum life is no joke, so I prioritize making my newborn sessions feel as chill and low-pressure as possible.

Before the session, Marla asked if she needed to clean up the house. Life felt hectic with three kids, and she was overwhelmed. My answer? Absolutely not. And that goes for all of my families. Your life is beautiful exactly as it is, and it doesn’t need to be curated for photos. Let’s embrace the chaos together! Years from now, you’ll want to remember what this season actually looked and felt like, not a perfectly pristine version of it.

We focused on documenting baby Maren as naturally as possible. I found the room with the best light, and we spent most of our time there, incorporating meaningful family heirlooms like handmade quilts. We also stepped out onto the back porch, where the older boys played on the trampoline while Marla and her husband cuddled their baby girl. Just simple, real life in all of its beauty.

For both sessions, I document with a mix of digital, 35 mm film, and Polaroids. I love leaning into the nostalgia of family photos and imagining the grown-up kiddos and future generations who will one day look back on them. Because these aren’t just images, they’re artifacts.
